Missing or inconsistent documents are the most common reason a case slows down. Preparing them early saves weeks later.
What you usually need
- An international passport valid for at least 1.5 years, with every page scanned
- A CV with real dates, employers and duties
- Passport-style photos to the destination's standard
- A police clearance certificate, if the destination asks for one
- Diplomas or certificates for skilled roles such as welding or driving
The exact list depends on the destination; see the visa rules for each country.
The details that get checked
- Your name is spelled the same way in the passport, CV and every form
- Dates of birth and passport numbers match everywhere
- Scans are sharp, in colour and show all four corners
- Certificates are recent enough; police clearances often have a validity limit
Translations and legalisation
Some countries ask for sworn translations or an apostille on certain documents. Do not order them until you know which documents the consulate needs: unnecessary translations cost money.
Keep a copy of everything
Keep one folder, on paper and in the cloud, with every document, invoice and message about your case. It helps if a form asks for a detail months later. Read more about your passport scan.
